Powder coating is a baby boomer. In 1962, the electrostatic spray process, developed by Pieter de Lange, entered the industrial finishing marketplace kicking and screaming, and by the late 1970s and early 1980s the technology was growing up quickly. Powder matured as a technology in the 1990s and celebrated its 50th birthday a few years ago.

I begin this issue’s message as I wait in the Las Vegas airport for my flight home from my first PCI Annual Meeting as your new Executive Director. I saw a lot of familiar faces and was very pleased to meet a good number of people I hadn’t previously met.  What a great crowd of interesting people and PCI supporters. I come away enthused and feel assured of good things to come from PCI. To all those who attended, thank you for taking time to join us for our 2015 Annual Meeting and for all of your encouraging comments.

There were some modest signs of progress to note in recent data, including a rebound in manufacturing production in October. This followed declines in both August and September. Despite slightly better performance, however, demand and output have been softer than desired for much of this year, with the year-over-year pace of manufacturing production declining from 4.3 percent in January to 1.9 percent in October. This easing has reflected headwinds from a strong dollar, weaknesses abroad and lower commodity prices, among other challenges. At the same time, total industrial production fell for the second straight month on weaker activity in mining and utilities.

Dave brings more than 25 years experience in business development in the industrial coatings market. For the past 2 years, he was with IFS Powder Coatings. Prior to that, Brooks spent 17 years with Spraylat in sales leading up to the PPG acquisition. Before joining Spraylat, Dave was an Account Manager with Morton International.

Visitors who stopped by The Powder Coating Institute's Booth got to enter a raffle to win an exclusive PCI long-sleeved t-shirt that features the Powder Coated Tough Stamp on the back. The four lucky winners were Intellifinishing's Josh Gilmore, Axalta's Bill Owens, ACT Test Panels' Brad Kimpell, and Pneu-Mech's Karla Cass.
