The Powder Coating Institute (PCI) held its annual Hall of Fame Banquet during the 2017 Annual Meeting at the Tamaya Resort and Spa in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M., this past summer. Hall of Fame members are selected for their many years of service and dedication to the association. This is an honor bestowed upon the recipient because of their efforts, accomplishments and contributions to PCI and the industry. The Hall of Fame was initiated in 2001 to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the association as well as to the industry as a whole.

For years our company sat on the sidelines, attending the Powder Coating Institute (PCI) trade shows and not much else. We enjoyed the networking opportunities, but we were looking for more. Two years ago, we joined PCI as a platinum member, which permits one employee to attend the annual meeting at reduced cost.

When I began my career in the powder coating industry back in the late 1970s, there were about 20 powder coating producers in North America. Most had non-paint producing traditions, companies like Ferro, H.B. Fuller, Armstrong, Polymer, Celanese, Farboil, Dexter and Mobil. Of course, there was a smattering of true paint companies, such as SherwinWilliams, DuPont and Glidden, the place where I started my coatings career odyssey. Soon thereafter Sherwin and DuPont got out of the powder business, leaving Glidden as the only sizable paint maker in the fold at this juncture.

Producing a powder coating is a multi-step process. It can be described as being semi-continuous because it begins as a batch process (weighing and pre-mixing) but evolves into a continuous process (extrusion and milling). In the last Technology Interchange article, we discussed the first steps in manufacturing a powder coating. This consists of weighing, premixing and extrusion. This edition covers what happens to the flakes generated from the extrusion process.
