Membership Memo - Why the Powder Coating Institute?

Posted on Tuesday, January 29, 2019

The Powder Coating Institute has been part of my professional life since its inception in 1981.

Having participated in meetings that resulted in the founding of PCI, it is gratifying to see the pervasiveness of powder coatings in today’s market place. It seems most everyone knows something about powder coatings these days. Even those not directly involved in the industry have at least heard of powder coating. This is evidence that powder coating has matured from a curiosity to a mainstream choice for an environmentally friendly finish.

As the leading organization representing powder coating in North America, PCI has helped to grow the utilization of powder coatings and to educate people about powder coating technology. However, an organization is only as strong as its members and our passionate members contribute in a variety of ways.

The expertise provided by member participation in PCI committees responsible for promoting powder coatings has helped to grow our industry. As a past committee chairperson, I have personally seen the positive impact that involvement in PCI committees can have on advancing the powder coating industry.

In addition, PCI members have been instrumental in standardizing test methods submitted to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This has given us a standard language to quantify powder coating performance characteristics which is widely used by custom coaters and OEMs alike. And, information from the Technical Briefs published by PCI would not be readily available without contributions from PCI members.

PCI has provided a forum for long lasting professional and personal relationships. The association continues to be a relevant platform for promoting, expanding and providing technical knowledge regarding powder coatings. As such, membership and active participation in PCI should be considered a must by all who participate in the powder coatings marketplace.
