COLOGNE, Germany--()--For the fifth consecutive year, Axalta Coating Systems, one of the leading global suppliers of liquid and powder coatings, has taken part in a 1,000km bike ride to raise money for Kom op tegen Kanker, a leading Belgian cancer charity.

This year, three Axalta teams took part in the event which was held between May 14 and 17. Each team of eight riders cycled 125km over four consecutive days, with the route beginning and ending in Mechelen, Belgium, where Axalta’s Belgian operations are located.

For this event, Axalta employees raised 15,000 Euros for Kom op tegen Kanker through a range of fundraising activities. The charity said the proceeds will be used on research into organ- and tissue-sparing treatment strategies for cancer patients. Axalta had special cycling apparel made displaying the Axalta logo. This was not only worn by the cycling teams but also was sold with all the revenue generated going to Kom op tegen Kanker.

Luc Van den Hemel, Plant Manager at Axalta in Mechelen, says: “Axalta is committed to supporting the communities in which we operate, and that includes fundraising for local charities. This is our fifth year taking part in the Kom op tegen Kanker bike ride and it was, yet again, a fun and worthwhile event. Our cyclists delivered a top performance and should be proud of their achievement. I am very grateful to everyone at Axalta who came together as a team to support our efforts and to raise money for this outstanding charity. And we’re hoping to do it all over again next year. In fact, the fundraising activities are already under way.”

This year, a record breaking 600 teams took part in the Kom op tegen Kanker 1,000km bike ride and raised an incredible 2.99 million Euros from the Flanders region of Belgium. For more information on the bike ride, go to www.1000km.be.
